1. RBI fines HDFC Bank, Axis & ICICI Rs 1 to 5 crore
i. The Reserve Bank on Monday imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore on Axis Bank, Rs 4.5 crore on HDFC Bank and Rs. 1 crore on ICICI Bank for violation of Know Your Customer KYC norms and anti-money laundering guidelines after inquiring into charges leveled by a online portal Cobrapost.
ii. “After considering the facts of each case ... Reserve Bank came to conclusion that some of the violations were substantiated and warranted imposition of monetary penalty...” the central bank said in a statement.
iii. RBI imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on Axis Bank, Rs 4.5 crore on HDFC Bank and Rs 1 crore on ICICI Bank.
iv. The penalty follows scrutiny carried out by RBI of books of accounts, internal control, compliance systems and processes of these three banks at their corporate offices and some branches during March and April this year.
v. The scrutiny was conducted to investigate into the allegations of contravention of Know Your Customer KYC,anti-money laundering guidelines against them following expose by online portal Cobrapost.
vi. The penalty, it said, was imposed after considering the facts of each case and individual bank’s reply, as also, personal submissions, information submitted and documents furnished.
NOTE: i. RBI had launched the investigation into the working of banks following the expose by Cobrapost which showed some bankers giving suggestions to customers on ways to bypass regulatory norms.
ii. In certain cases, the banks failed to obtain permanent account number (PAN) card details or form 60/61 and verify the source of funds credited to a few non-resident ordinary (NRO) accounts.
iii. The first expose had named ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank. Later scores of other public and private sector banks and insurance companies figured in the expose.
2.    Advani quits BJP posts
i. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani on Monday resigned from all posts in the party, a day after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was appointed as the chief of the party’s election campaign committee.
ii. Mr. Modi’s elevation was announced at the three-day meeting of the BJP national executive in Goa which Mr. Advani skipped, citing health reasons
iii. It was for the first time in his more than four-decade-long political career that Mr. Advani had given the national executive of the party a miss, apparently in a bid to express his displeasure over elevation of Mr. Modi.
iv. In his one-page resignation letter to the party president, Mr Advani said: “For some time, I have been finding it difficult to reconcile either with the current functioning of the party, or the direction in which it is going... most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas.’’
v. A founder-member of the BJP, Mr. Advani, 85, resigned from all main bodies of the party --- Parliamentary Board, National Executive and Election Committee.
vi. With Mr. Advani’s resignation, the internal rift in the BJP has come out in the open as also the unease which some of the party leaders had been feeling over the elevation of Mr. Modi who would now be the face of the party to take it through the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
vii. BJP president Rajnath Singh called on Mr Advani at his Prithviraj Road residence in the national Capital on Monday afternoon but failed in his attempt to appease him.
Rajnath rejects Advani's resignation
i. BJP president Rajnath Singh Monday refused to accept party leader L. K. Advani's resignation from organisational posts
ii. "I have not accepted Shri Advaniji's resignation," Rajnath Singh said in a tweet.
iii. BJP sources said that the party leadership would make efforts to persuade Advani to reconsider his decision.
3.    Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna : for BPL families in Assam
i. In Assam, BPL families are availing medical benefits under the Centre’s Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna,RSBY.  
ii. the scheme is being implemented in 24 districts. Remaining 3 districts will also be covered soon.
iii. As of now around 1 lakh 90 thousand families have been enrolled under RSBY in 6 districts. 92 private and public hospitals have been empanelled under the scheme.
iv. Encouraged by the success of the scheme, Assam government has decided to launch a new health scheme from 1st of next month. 
v. State Health Minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the new scheme will extend financial support to BPL families up to 5 thousand rupees for Radiological investigation like X-Ray, City Scan, MRI.
vi. The new scheme will enhance the medical benefits to the weaker section of the society along the RSBY.
4.    Railways to launch SMS-based service for hygiene complaints
i. Railways have decided to launch an SMS-based service for immediate response to passenger complaints regarding housekeeping service in coaches.  
ii. Set to launch on a few select trains, the service will facilitate passengers to contact the onboard staff via SMS or phone-call, in order to complain regarding cleanliness in coaches, toilets and other problems faced during the journey.
iii. A senior Railway Ministry official has said that, an On-site Passenger Complaint Redressal System (OPCRS) is being developed as envisaged in the Rail Budget 2013-14.
iv. The service is likely to be launched, in either Mumbai Rajdhani or Bangalore Rajdhani as a pilot project soon.
v. "Passengers will SMS his PNR on a common number like one being used for PNR inquiry," the official said.
vi. The Railways, have asked for a three-digit number from the Department of Telecommunication for the purpose.
vii. Once the SMS is sent, the information will be registered on OPCRS connected with GSM network, and it will be immediately routed to mobile phone available with housekeeping supervisor on train.
viii. Once the job is done, housekeeping supervisor would request for complaint ID from the passenger and send it via SMS from the hand held unit back to OPCRS.
5.    Rafael Nadal won French Open Title 2013
i. Rafael Nadal won his 8th Men's Singles Tittle of the French Open Tennis Tournament.
ii. In the final at Paris, Nadal beat Spanish compatriot David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. With this, he became the first player to win 8 Singles Titles at the same Grand Slam Tournament. 
iii. It also gave Nadal his 59th win out of 60 matches played in Paris.
iv. Last year, he passed six-time Roland winner Bjorn Borg with his seventh title. It was his 12th Grand Slam title overall.
6.    Serena Willimas won French Open Title 2013 
i. Serena Williams  won the Women's Singles title of French Open Tennis tournament  by defeating Maria Sharapova in straight sets by 6-4, 6-4.
ii. This is Serena's second French Open title and 16th grand slam.
iii. It was Sharapova’s 10th straight loss to Williams.
NOTE: At 31 years, 247 days Serena Willimas is the oldest women in the Open Era to win the French Open title. She beat the record of Chris Evert who set the previous mark in 1986.
7.    Srikanth  clinched the Thailand Open Badminton 2013
i. K Srikanth became the latest badminton sensation to emerge from India as he lifted his maiden men's singles title with a stunning straight-game triumph over top-seeded local favourite Boonsak Ponsana at the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold in Bangkok on Sunday.
ii. The 20-year-old from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh beat world number eight Ponsana 21-16 21-12 in a 34-minute match to script the biggest win of his still nascent career.
iii. Thailand Open Badminton 2013 was held in Bangkok.
8.    Bob and Mike Bryan won Doubles Title at French Open 2013
i. Top-ranked American twins Bob and Mike Bryan won their record 14th major doubles title by defeating Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut of France 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in the French Open men's doubles final.
ii. The local favourite Llodra and Mahut were looking to become the first French pair since Yannick Noah and Henri Leconte in 1984 to win the doubles title at Roland Garros.
iii. The Bryans had won their only other French Open in 2003. This is their 14th major doubles title. 
9.    Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix
i. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won the Canadian Grand Prix, defeating Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in Montreal on Sunday, meanwhile, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso took the third and second position simultaneously.
ii. Vettel, fierce as ever, led from start to finish to claim the top spot, which happens to be a maiden for both him and Red Bull
iii. This happens to be Vettel's third success of the season, after winning both in Malaysia and Bahrain.
10.  BCCI suspends Raj Kundra
i. Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra was suspended by the BCCI on charges of gambling during IPL 6 matches
ii. "The Working Committee today decided to suspend Raj Kundra on allegations of gambling on IPL VI matches till the pendency of inquiry," a senior working committee member and BCCI office-bearer said in New Delhi on Monday.
iii. "Kundra will be debarred from taking part in any cricketing activity related to Rajasthan Royals which effectively means that he won't be seen during Rajasthan Royals matches in the upcoming Champions League Twenty20 in September," he said.
iv. The Board's head of the interim arrangement, Jagmohan Dalimya, was forced to call the meeting after the Delhi Police claimed that Kundra, a minority (11.7 percent) shareholder in Rajasthan Royals, had confessed to betting during the IPL matches.
v. In another decision, the BCCI Working Committee agreed that the two-member panel -- comprising Justice T Jayaram Chouta and Justice R Balasubramanian -- which is currently investigating Meiyappan and CSK would also probe Kundra and Rajasthan Royals.
11.  India take on West Indies tomorrow 
i. With eyes firmly set on a semifinal berth, a confident India will seek to keep the momentum going when they take on an unpredictable West Indies in a crucial Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Oval in London on Tuesday.
ii. Both the teams have won their opening group matches in contrasting fashion, and know very well that a win will almost guarantee a spot in the last four stage of the tournament, being held for the last time.
iii. While reigning world champions India defeated injury-hit South Africa by 26 runs in Cardiff after posting a commanding 331 for 7, the West Indies eked out a close two-wicket win over Pakistan in a low-scoring game on Friday.
iv. But come tomorrow, the clash will be a battle between many players who have solid 'knowledge' of each other.
