There is a quote from Margaret Thatcher who said: "Power is like being a lady ... if you have to tell people you are, are not." Personally, I think the fascinating study of power. Dictionary.com defines power as "a person or thing that possesses or exercises authority or influence." Therefore, in essence, when energy use, we are using our authority to get something.

Everyone has the power. Everyone. And I do not think power is a bad thing. The question becomes what kind of power that a person has and how one uses that power. Here are some common types of power are in the workplace.

* The coercive power is associated with people who are able to punish others. People are afraid of the consequences of not doing what is asked of them.

* The power connection is based on you know. This person knows and has heard of, other powerful people within the organization.

* Expert power comes from the experience of a person (duh!). This is often a person with a skill or achieving acclaim.

* A person who has access to information valuable or important information is power.

* Legitimate power comes from the position a person holds. This relates to the title of a person and work responsibilities. You can also hear this referred to the power of position.

* People who are much loved and respected may have referent power.

* The power of the reward is based on a person's ability to provide rewards. Such rewards could come in the form of assignments, schedules, remuneration or benefits.

Now, stop being modest and thinking to yourself ... I have no power. As you can see, there are many different ways to power can manifest. And for that reason it is important to note that power exists in us all. It is also possible that different types of power to different groups or situations.

Now, the two biggest mistakes I see with using people to revolve around (1) trying to use the power that has not and (2) with the wrong kind of power to achieve results.

To help you identify your "power zone", take a moment and think about how to try to influence the actions of others. You could use the above descriptions as a pseudo-self-evaluation. Rate yourself on a scale of 1.5 in each of the different kinds of power. With not being in all the characteristics of you and 5 very characteristic.

This can be an exercise (sorry for the pun) powerful. If you are honest with yourself, I hope you find useful results. Not only the way they tend to use power, but in how others use the power with you.
